The Village Hall organised a VE Day +80 Celebration on Bank
Holiday Monday. In traditional style the village set to, "put
the flags out", dressed the Hall,
dressed themselves, got cooking and turned up on the Monday
lunchtime for a village get-together to celebrate he day, a
day that included singing and dancing and even a fly-past.
[ not too many photos as we were busy organising and enjoying
ourselves ]
The Flags
are out for the Bank Holiday national celebration.
Decked the halls and laid the tables the day
before, all ready for 66 pre-booked places.
Just as the event started we had a rather different
fly-past . . . normally it is fast jets screaming up the valley.
No "Red Arrows" for us today . . .
they were down flying over Buckingham Palace.
Our visitor was a four jet-engined leviathon
cruising slowly and effortlessly up the valley at little more
than 500 ft above us.
I believe it's a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III
of the US Air Force Transport division, which flew on up the
valley and climbed last minute to clear Honister Pass.

Everyone
brough a plate of home cooked food . . .
. . . and laid it out
on a central table.
There was even a plate of retro-style Spam Sandwiches
!
After the main course, the table was re-laid
with desserts, cheese and biscuits.
Beautifully
decorated with red, white and blue designs.
Relaxing after a lovely
meal (I should have asked Marion to smile!)
The middle table enjoying their desserts.
Betty, here in the blue cardigan, celebrated
the original VE Day here in the valley, which was held at the
School House.
That building was extended in the 1950's to
become the Village Hall, the very place that we are today. She's
here celebrating again 80 years later.
Her fellow school mate who was also here that
day was William, who was sitting next to Marion in the last
photo.
Getting in the mood . . . and the music hadn't
begun yet !
Time for everyone to walk outside onto the playground
/ car parking area for a photo.
John (the photographer) and Andy try to arrange
everyone into some semblance of an organised group.
[ Perhaps we could have organised one of the
farmers to herd them together ? ]
I catch a quick photo before everyone was finally
in place.
After the photo we all returned indoors, to
be entertained by Cath and Emma.
Really sounding
the part, they sang 1940's songs . . . both swing and
boogie . . .
. . . which encouraged
many of the audience to get up and dance.
Getting
"In the Mood".
Jan . . . not one to
turn her nose up at a enjoyable afternoon.
Having cleared the food table there was plenty
of space for people to join in.
Kath, like many others, was dressed in style
for the afternoon.

Cath and Emma returned for a second set after a short
break
and the music continued.
The second half
included several classic songs
that were written in the 1930's,
were popular in the 1940's and even found
success
as 'pop songs' in recent years.

The "Official Valley Photo" taken
at the Village Hall on Monday by John MacFarlane.
The competition for the best dressed lady
and gent in 1940's style went to Laura Robinson (black dress
front row) and Ted Furniss (hat and yellow tie) in the back
row.
