With all the fun and games (and complications) of the last few weeks, our walks have been in short supply.

Cathy had planned to come up to the Lakes and Hilton was due to house and dog sit while we were to go to Holland on another family visit for Loes.

The visit to Holland didn't happen of course but Cathy, Mark and Hilton still came up to enjoy time in the Lakes.

Foreign holidays were replaced by necessary hospital visits so the three visitors also had a few days on their own, for walks of their own liking.

(My daughter) Cathy and Mark enjoying a mountain snack it seems.
(Friend) Hilton with Cathy. He was also able to enjoy a few walks.

[Please note: all these pictures (apart from an odd one at the end) were taken by Cathy, Mark or Hilton . . . who's is who's is not always clear.]

The first walk they enjoyed was one to Whinlatter Forest . . .
where they walked up through the trees in search of . . .

The Gruffalo . . . Mark the one on the left in case you're confused.
They continues the walk so as to include a summit or two.

This was the view from the forest track, high above Thornthwaite and Bassenthwaite Lake.

There's clear views over Keswick to the Helvellyn Range in the distance.

The route to Barf includes a small stream crossing
Woodland clearance exposes lower forest tracks.

The vie from the top of Barf, looking south over Derwent Water.

Turning to the north, a view over Bass Lake and Binsey which just about included the Scottish Hills.

Their next summit of choice was to be Lord's Seat, over there in the distance.

Presumably in no time at all they were on the summit, with Boris and Dougal hoping for some of that snack biscuit no doubt.

In subsequent days, when doing a small walk from the cottage, they enjoyed a trip up Scale Hill close to home.

The walk was extended across and down to Crummock Water, with a view here of Mellbreak from the Boathouse.

From our last walk page you may have remembered this photo with Cathy and I

of Loes at the Loweswater Bothy.

That day she and Mark plus Boris took Dougal

and continued on a longer walk up through the woods,

making their way back to the cottage via the Coffin Route.

Here Mark does his Jeremy Clarkson impression whilst resting on the top wall.

The 'Coffin Route' high above Loweswater, with lovely views over to Grasmoor and Crummock Water.

After passing the top of Holme Woods the path drops towards . . .
. . . a selfie opportunity by High Nook Tarn.

Dougal, always the water dog . . .
. . . enjoys a dip, but where's the ball he asks ?

They also did another walk . . . which you can have a 'guess at' as a quiz . . . where are they walking ?

The answer can be found in the 'previous walk' link at the bottom of this page.

Cathy and Mark then left for home

and we left for a couple of days in Leeds

as we had to get back to check out Loes's orthopaedic progress.

On our return Hilton was still in Loweswater

which was good as he was looking after the dogs

and the cottage !

Once I was back, he fancied a local walk with a bit more 'altitude'.

I knew one close at hand that was 509 metres

and would take under two hours . . .

so a walk up Mellbreak was on the cards again.

Climbing the northern end of Mellbreak and looking back at Low Fell, Darling Fell and Loweswater.

The Lorton Valley fades away to the right.

Below us in the field were signs of an ancient earthwork.
"A peep round the Corner" and yes, that's a bit of rain falling.

We returned via the traverse path around the side of the fell.
Hilton was obviously impressed with the views of Loweswater from this path.

As I said earlier, all the pictures here, apart from the one I took on Hilton's phone, were all taken by Cathy, Mark or by Hilton himself

Many thanks for permission to post them here.
