Retreat to the quiet of the Western Lakes
On further reading on AW's book, all is revealed. The ruin was the remains of Lowther House, an old wooden shooting lodge, but all that remained in 1957 was the end wall and stone chimney. Today even that is reduced to a low pile of stones. The concrete area was presumably the floor of the old wooden stables. ( Perhaps I should go back and re-read a few more of his books !! )
