Our route took us across the front of the fell and then up the valley above the Pheasant Inn and Routenbeck. A longer way to the top but it's a gentle climb. Like Binsey before, Skiddaw summit in the background is shrouded in low mist. That's where Skiddaw should be and that is where the Ospreys now live after they changed nest site. In Chapel Wood, Ann stopped for a few photos, here one of the Thistles . . . . . . and another of the Harebells. A really nice mix of flowers here. The ruins of the Old Chapel of St Margaret's. Ben and Sarah read the information signboard. The church was abandoned about 150 years ago in favour of the new one, built on the other side of the hill. The valley of Wythop Beck. It looks clearer out to the west. The lambs have grown considerably over the Summer. Kelswick Farm, a nice looking traditional property, hidden behind a big stone barn. The House and barn are themselves hidden behind a protective screen of trees. After the farm, our route came down the road a short way, then cut off onto the gently rising path on which I now stand. Up and over the ridge and we are back. Once again we were looking at Bassenthwaite Lake and the A66 below. Binsey still in the cloud, like it was at the start.
Sale Fell is always a good little walk. Ben now needs to climb Ling Fell tomorrow in order to complete his ascents of all the North Western Fells. |
