Date : Monday 17th January 2005

Location : Binsey, Cumbria, at the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake

Occasion : Bethan's First Wainwright

Walk details : A morning walk with Anna, David, Ann and the dogs, Harry (12 mths) and Bethan (14 wks)

Weather : A cool and very breezy day following the big storms of the previous week.

Anna and David were in the Lakes on holiday and fancied a smaller climb after their recent ascent of Blencathra.

Bethan needed a smaller ascent 'cos she's still only got little legs !

Parking near Binsey Cottages we crossed the ladder stile onto the open ground.

Behind was Skiddaw and Dash Falls in the darker area to the left.

It was going to be a "bad hair day" I could tell.

Wrapped up against the ever increasing wind we walked the green path up towards the summit.

The small lake behind is Over Water.

Bethan's first Wainwright Summit celebrated by a lift onto the stone-built trig point of Binsey.

Anna and David and myself well wrapped against the wind.

Harry, who used to be small enough to sit on the top of these things

was still prepared to give it a try. He's still a bit of a puppy himself.

The summit of Binsey is very exposed and consequently we were buffeted by the strong westerly winds.

This makes photography that little more difficult !

This was my attempt at the view of the western fells over Bassenthwaite Lake.

It doesn't really show how fast the clouds were moving though.

After a brisk walk we retreated to the warm fire and good food of the local hostelry in Bassenthwaite village.

Full marks to the chef of the Sun Inn, and for that matter to the head brewer at Jennings.

Technical note: Pictures taken with a Canon IXUS 400 Digital camera.

Resized in Photoshop, and built up on a Dreamweaver web builder.
