We have a weekend in Leicestershire at the invitation of our good friend Hilton.

The main purpose of the weekend is to attend a memorial picnic on Sunday

but we can still enjoy a couple of local walks with Hilton along the way.

A local woodland and beauty spot close to his home in Thringstone is Cademan Woods

Hidden in the trees are a number of natural granite tors which are often enjoyed as rock climbs in their own right.

Today a leisurely stroll brings us to the top where, lo and behold, there's a trig point.

In the far distance is Breedon on the Hill, recognisable on the day by the prominent church tower.

After a drive down from Cumbria it was lovely to get out in the sunshine for a walk.

On Sunday we drive the short distance to Ashby for the picnic.

Lorna on the right, a good friend of Hilton, was also a friend of ours and she visited the Lake District on several occasions.

She was a local deputy head of a secondary school but sadly died in a road accident near her home earlier this year.

The family requested a rather different memorial to celebrate her life.

They requested a "Picnic in the Park"  and asked all her friends to attend the event at the local cricket club.

A real family affair with loads of children . . . and everyone brought a picnic and spent the whole afternoon there.

There was live music as well, the first of two groups being the Academy of Rock

There was also some unofficial entertainment as one family tried really hard to erect their gazebo shelter . . . for quite some time !

They join all the poles in the right order ...
but they kept falling apart ...
I suggest they drop it down to low level ...

Add the white roof first, not the green walls.
"Hang on . . . wait till everyone is ready" ...
Sorted !

I've kept the pictures small to protect the guilty . . . but to be fair they hadn't put it up before and several of the clips were broken or missing.

Hilton had chance to talk to many of his friends and acquaintances.

He even tried to interview one of his ex-pupils using a pretend microphone . . . at least that's what it looks like.

Harry and Dylan didn't really know anyone

so enjoyed a few moments of piece and quiet.

However there were times when their presence was needed . . . and treats were on offer too.

The band played many tunes that would have been familiar to Lorna.

Her daughter 'Laine made an impassioned speech and thanked everyone for attending.

Lorna was musical too and enjoyed playing with the local Ukulele Band,

so they closed the afternoon with a selection of tunes that band members had suggested would be relevant to the occasion.

In the evening we adjourned to The Horse Inn in Shepshed

where we met up with friends Robert, Pat and their family.

No 'people' pictures this time

and this is a library shot of the pub as it was raining when we arrived

but before leaving I did use my phone on three occasions

to catch the ambiance of the artwork.

The Horse Inn

with of course a (pommel) horse.

But the real reason for the photos . . . the three-dimensional wooden artwork which was stunning.

. . . and room at the bar to leave your young charger.
