  Photographing The Lake District

This book is a comprehensive photographic location guide to taking photos in the Lake District.  Author Stuart Holmes describes numerous locations and hundreds of viewpoints for the reader to visit.

At first I thought he has reduced Lakeland Photography to a tick list of places and example of pictures unattainable to us mere mortals. On reading the book I soon began to realise his depth of knowledge and appreciate the easy way he has written the book so as to both inspire and educate us into taking better pictures.

Each location chapter has an overview describing the history of the place, any literary connections, plus the geological and natural history features of the area. Detailed directions with maps and sat nav information are given, along with more detailed local access information.

Suggested photographic viewpoints are described at each location with advice on how to take the best photographs when you get there. It is beautifully illustrated with over 300 high quality colour photographs of Lakeland landscapes and rural life.

The first section describes how to improve your photography including camera and lens choice, composition, exposure, depth of field, sunrise and sunset photography.  The last chapter is devoted to photographing such things as waterfalls and catching that elusive rainbow.

On the inside front cover of the book (see right) there is a sun compass and sun elevation guide along with sunset and sunrise times throughout the year. This will assist you in making sure that you are in the right place at the right time.

This guidebook will appeal to both keen photographers and anyone with a camera who visits this National Park, but the suggestions and technical information are relevant to photos taken anywhere ... so it is a must for all enthusiasts.

If you can't make it to the Lakes, keep an eye out in your own area in 2015 as other National Parks and regions are due to be covered in the same way in the year ahead.
