" Boats, Cars and a Walk to the Pool"

Location of Start : Bassenthwaite Sailing Club, Cumbria, Uk ( NY 143 211 )

Places visited : The club house and grounds / Ann to Harry's Pool in Loweswater

Walk details : Not a lot.

Highest point : Getting the kids out on the water without getting wet ourselves.

Walked with : Myself with Jen, Sam, Tom, meeting up with family at the lake

Ann with Catherine, Abi and Alexander and the dogs, Harry and Bethan.

Weather : Rain to start but clearing to nice sunshine again.

Another wet morning which cleared beautifully to warm sunshine.

I took the older boys and Jenna to Bass Lake to meet up with my brothers and sister.

Ann took Cathy and the younger children to Harry's pool in the Mosedale Valley here in Loweswater.

Cheer up Tom . . . it could be raining . . . oh it is !!

Who wants to go sailing ?

My brother Stephen had brought up his 420 dinghy up to the Lakes and acquired a day pass for the Bass Lake Sailing Club

which provides good parking, space to rig and launch the boat and changing facilities should he get wet . . . heaven forbid.

Here he's tilted the boat down to screw the burgee (flag) on the masthead to indicate the wind direction when out on the water.

Sam and Mary help Stephen rig the boat.
Just a short haul to the slipway and they'll be ready.

All aboard . . . Stephen, Sam and Tom.

Sam sails regularly at Pin Mill but this is Tom's first time out in a sailing boat.

They venture out in light winds onto the lake . . .
. . . further and further out . . .

until we could hardly see them in the distance.

Time to adjourn to the club house for a little light refreshment . . . and to enjoy the sailing environment.

Meanwhile back in the valley . . .

Bethan takes Abigail for a walk up the Kirkhead track towards Mosedale.

Ann is popular as she hold all the aces . . .
. . . or should I say the packet of Polos.

More polos . . . hey we were missing out on this down at the lake.

" If you wanted Polos you should have come on the walk "

All Harry wanted was a stick to be thrown.

If you throw several in the water he'll swim for them too.

Bethan was happy with her first one . . . which she took aside and chewed.

Another stick . . . brilliant . . . my favourite game.

Ann didn't have the monopoly on the sunshine

for as we return to Bass Lake we find the sun shining and the skies clearing nicely.

Peter and Mary try to identify Stephen's boat out of all the dinghies on the water today.

That's them moving left to right.

All the other boats are finishing a midday race and are travelling back to the slipway . . . in the other direction.

Blue skies as they return at the end of their sail.
How was it Tom ?

" Thumbs up . . . Magic "

Jenna fancied a quick sail too . . .
. . . so borrowed a life jacket and climbed aboard.

Underway, as Stephen drops the rudder deeper in the water.
A good breeze and they are off at reasonable speed.

Midday turned to lunchtime so they sailed back.
Back onto the boat trailer at the end of their outing.

Peter had brought his motor-home over for the weekend and was able to provide a table and chairs for lunch.

All contributions were placed on the table and a grand feast was enjoyed by all.

After lunch we helped Stephen pack the boat away . . .

but the boys discovered Stephen's classic MG Midget parked next to the camper.

" Super cool "

"Dohh . . . I'm too young to drive it "

No problem . . . Elaine offered to drive the boys round the club grounds.

First Tom . . .

. . . and then Sam enjoyed a classic if slow drive around.

My chance to sit in the driving seat . . .
. . . and pretend to be a racing driver.

A world of imagination.
Yeah . . . but you've forgotten your seatbelt !!

Back down to earth as Elaine points out to Tom that he can't even see over the steering wheel.

Maybe he will drive one himself when he's older.

I wonder what the classic cars of 2011 will be in forty years time ?
