Weather : Unexpected overnight snow, blue skies and sunshine.

It was sleeting when we went to bed last night !

The forecast was for a low pressure bringing overnight wind and rain.

I thought the area supposed to get snow was restricted to Scotland

so it was with a slight surprise that we awoke this morning to white hills, white fields and sunshine.

The red phone box ( NY 143 211 ) . . . Pity today is a work-day !

Mellbreak and the Loweswater Fells taken from the drive up Whinlatter Pass.

Sheep grazing alongside Hobcarton Gill just above Scawgill Bridge.

Ladyside Pike is the triangular peak in the centre and Hobcarton Crags form the head of the valley to the left.

Winter wonderland looking across to the Swinside Plantation.

Above the Forestry Cottages the road starts to get snowed over.

Almost Canadian.

The entrance to the Forest Centre at the top of the pass.
Into the sun on the way down towards Keswick.

Care now as I descend to the tight bend over the Masmill Beck bridge.

The panorama from the Whinlatter viewpoint looking across to the Skiddaw Fells.

There are road works at the Portinscale turning on the A66

so there is time to catch a photo of Barrow Fell with the distinctive outline of Causey Pike behind.

Skiddaw's Dodd Fell resplendent in sunshine.

Skiddaw Little Man and the ascent to Skiddaw on the left are shrouded in mist.

This was the full view from the lay-by on the way over the pass

Move your cursor over the photo to see the view on the way back eight or so hours later.

Notice the change of snow line after the warmth of the day.
